Most of the itineraries in the municipality of Arraia-Maeztu climb to the mountain peaks. These mountain itineraries are not marked and are recommended for individuals that know a bit about mountaineering.

The following itineraries are worth mentioning:

Itinerary: Monte Arburu

This mountain especially stands out in the fall due to its colorful plant life. The trail is not difficult, but should be avoided when it is foggy. There are various ways to access this mountain (Atauri, Antoñana, Leorza or Cicujano), but the best and easiest one is the one that starts in Maestu.

Itinerary: Monte Arraialde

This is a short itinerary that has incredible vistas at its peak. You have to pay careful attention so that you don?t get lost because there are many trails that cross this trail. If ever in doubt, avoid taking any trail that goes to the left and make sure to continue along the trails that climb up the mountain. At times, the trail borders the facilities of Berrozi belonging to the Basque Government which is why you will find signs indicating the safety boundaries that should not be crossed. You can climb Arraialde from Virgala Mayor or Azazeta Pass, but we recommend that you take the trail that starts in the town of Azázeta.

Itinerary: Monte Arrigorrista

This is one of the Iturrieta Mountains. There is a beautiful panoramic view of the Llanada Alavesa from the peak. It is a wonderful family outing along an easy trail that treks through the woods which is especially nice on hot summer days. We don?t recommend getting off the main trail so that you don?t get lost. You can start from Opakua Pass or Roitegui.

Itinerary: Monte Bitigarra

This itinerary passes through the Iturrieta Mountains where you can see all types of plant life. It isn?t too difficult, but you must be careful as not to lose track of the trail. Try to avoid hiking it when there is fog so that you don?t get lost. You can start from different places: San Vicente de Arana, Alda, Roitegui, Ermita de Santa Teodosia, and Sabando.

Itinerary: Monte Indiagana

These mountains along with Itxogana are part of the Mountains of Vitoria. There are long stretches of forest that show their beauty and colors in the fall and spring. You can start hiking from Azazeta Pass or from the town of Azazeta.

  • Vertical climb: 286m.

Itinerary: Monte Itxogana

This mountain is one of the most popular among mountain lovers in Alava because it is close to Vitoria-Gasteiz and because it is easy to climb and has a wonderful panoramic view of the Llanada Alavesa that you can enjoy from its peak. Just like Indiagana, it is a mountain that has long stretches of forests that show off their beauty and colors in the fall and spring. From the peak, you can hike down to the San Vitor hermitage where there is a small park for relaxing. You can start hiking from Azáceta Pass or from the town of Azazeta.

Itinerary: Mount San Cristóbal

In the municipality Arraia-Maeztu, Mount San Cristobal is nestled in the Izki Mountains and is a very popular peak with hikers in the area. This itinerary is a nice family excursion that gives you a panoramic view of Izki. Just like the other mountains, this trail should be avoided when it is foggy. Start hiking in Apellániz.

Itinerary: Monte San Justi

The climb to the peak of this mountain partly coincides with the trail to San Cristobal which means that you can combine both hikes into one. This itinerary is a nice family outing where you will enjoy varied plant life and beautiful passes that overlook the Izki forest. Start hiking in Apellániz.
